The Magic Of The Welland Canal

On the way to visit Niagara Falls, the Victory Cruise Lines ships disembarks at Port Colborne on the southern end of the Welland Canal. The canal is definitely a highlight during our sailing. It is located in the Niagara region of Ontario, Canada between two of North America’s Great Lakes, Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.

One of the most interesting things about the canal are the locks, it is an experience like no other. A glass of wine and your camera are the best company to watch the ship go through the canal. The time required to travel the canal is usually less than eight hours.

The Welland Canal

The Welland Canal consists of eight locks and each one of them is very entertaining to watch. The maximum vessel length allowed to transit the locks is 740 feet (225.5 m). Another interesting fact is that the canal closes during the winter time when weather conditions become a hazard to both navigation and shipping. It reopens again during the Spring, typically late March or April.

The Locks

While passing the locks during the day, we decided to stay outside to experience this wonder and shoot a video. Take a look at Victory I on one of the locks on the Welland Canal.

You too can enjoy this amazing journey on Victory I or Victory II. Take a look at the dates that these ships sail on the Welland Canal.
