Sailing the Great Lakes
When asked by a client what I like about sailing on the Great Lakes … this is my answer …
The Great Lakes are an area of our country that is relatively new to the cruise industry. Yes, there have been many ships on the Great Lakes for industrial purposes but tourism is relatively new. The ports welcome you as they are not overrun with tourism.
There are so many small port cities that are on lakes that would otherwise go unexplored. The Great Lakes sailings visit the small quaint places like Little Current, Mackinac Island as well as the big cities of Cleveland, Detroit etc.
The Great Lakes also brings us from the USA to Canada and weaves back and forth as the lakes do between the two countries. Again visiting places like Toronto and Montreal, along with small towns of Charlottetown and Kingston.
The ships are small, rarely any rough water since you are on lakes. Not long flights and standing in long lines. Only passports for the sailing that visit Canada.
The time to go is now. In the next few years, we are going to see an explosion of new ships sailing the Great Lakes. Ponant does one sailing a year, that will increase. Viking River is going to put a ship on the lakes. And a few other cruise operators are planning the same.
